The city of Santa Cruz has actually put out a brochure in an attempt to teach people how to drive a roundabout. After almost being hit -- both in my car and walking -- by people hopelessly confused about how to drive the new roundabout at Depot Park, I cavilled about it in The Good Times' recent "Best of Issue."
The problem is that Americans just don't know how to figure them out. So now the city apparently actually realizes it, and has actually published a brochure on "How to drive a roundabout."
I think it's an admission that -- gulp -- maybe it's not going to work.
Call it a case of "Euro-Envy." I think it has to do with the kind of folks who just want us to be more continental. I don’t exactly know why it bothers me; I just don’t have le mot juste.
