Karen Kefauver is Santa Cruz's leading expert in social media, and she brought her knowledge to a gathering of nearly 30 business leaders this week at the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce "Caffeineighted" series.
Highly recommended for those interested in using Facebook for marketing.
That said, I still have reservations about the use of Facebook in that way. Is that really what we envisioned when we first signed up? Or is everything and every connection about marketing these days?
Karen did offer up a number of strategies to keep from pissing off your Facebook friends and viewers. Sadly, there are a lot of folks who don't pay attention to her warnings. "It's about content, not advertising," she advised.
Still, when I sign on to Facebook I'm more interested in whether my old friends are now grandparents or whether they have something funny to say. Frankly, I'd just as soon not be marketed at.
