Expect to get some news next week about the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Exploration Center, which is now under construction and taking shape at its location near the Santa Cruz Wharf. Construction is moving along, and the first of the interior exhibits will be going in -- a model of the Monterey Bay Marine Canyon off Moss Landing.
The two-story canyon exhibit -- an artist's rendition is pictured here -- is due to be put into place next week. Expect to see coverage of the installation in the newspaper and on television by Tuesday or Wednesday.
Construction of the facility is on target for its intended opening in the summer of 2012. The construction of the facility is paid for, but fund-raising continues in order to fund the ambitious exhibits. Thanks to some large donations and some grants, the project is within about $300,000 of its $3-million goal.
